Each bookend has a separate Chinese proverb written in English and Hanzi characters, presumably made by a Chinese-American student named "Check" in a San Francisco high school's Industrial Arts class. According to an article in the SF Examiner March 18, 1942, from January 1941 to February 1942 over 13,000 men and boys took courses in these "Industrial Arts" classes to prepare them for manufacturing jobs in the war effort.
